The Coalition of Blacks Against Breast Cancer

More from this show

The Coalition of Blacks Against Breast Cancer is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Although it’s not a Mayo organization, the Phoenix group was founded by Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Michele Halyard and Marion Kelly. It provides updated cancer diagnosis and treatment information and prevention through a combination of community outreach, open dialogue surrounding cancer, and resources. The death rate of African-American breast cancer patients is 40% higher than other ethnicities. We’ll talk to Dr. Halyard, radiation oncologist and dean of Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, Arizona Campus, and co-founder of the Coalition of Blacks Against Breast Cancer, more about the group.
