Arizona PBS airs ‘American Hate,’ a documentary examining the legacy of hate in the U.S.

More from this show

We first brought you the documentary “American Hate” last August in the wake of deadly mass-shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. The documentary explores the growing climate of hate in the U.S. and what it means to the country today. This important film is part of the Carnegie-Knight News21 project titled “Hate in America”. The documentary seems all the more appropriate “today” as the country grapples with issues of inequality and systemic racism.

The 2018 investigation produced by the nation’s top journalism students and graduates examined intolerance, racism, and hate crimes. According to a News21 analysis of the federal National Crime Victimization Survey, more than 2.4 million crimes, whose victims suspect were motivated by hate, were committed across the United States in the five years between 2012 and 2016.

In a matter of eight months, News21 journalists traveled on a 7,000-mile road trip, reporting from 36 states, where reporters explored off-beaten paths and spoke with more than 150 people about the state of hate in America.
