On Arizona Horizon this week, Ted Simons sat down for a conversation with new Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.

Mitchell defeated Democratic opponent Julie Gunnigle in the November Midterm election.

Rachel Mitchell is a veteran prosecutor with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. For the past thirty years, Mitchell has dedicated her career to protecting families. She has done this by prosecuting crimes against children, ensuring the integrity of our legal system, and leading teams of prosecutors to hold dangerous criminals accountable.

HER CAREER

Throughout her career, Mitchell has advocated strengthening crimes against children and sex assault laws in the state. Additionally, she has pushed for changes in the courtroom to comfort victims testifying in abuse cases. She regularly teaches on a variety of criminal justice topics, Plus, she’s a nationally recognized speaker on sex assault and child abuse prosecution.

In 2020, Mitchell was responsible for the creation of the MCAO Prosecution Integrity Unit. That unit is responsible for overseeing conviction integrity and concerns involving law enforcement misconduct. She has advocated strengthening crimes against children and sex assault laws in the state and has pushed for changes in the courtroom to comfort victims testifying in abuse cases. She regularly teaches on a variety of criminal justice topics and is a nationally-recognized speaker on sex assault and child abuse prosecution.

Back 2019, she served as the acting Maricopa County Attorney after the appointment of Bill Montgomery to the Arizona Supreme Court. Previously, she was the Chief Deputy County Attorney, and Chief of the Special Victims Division.

Mitchell rose to national prominence when she served as Nominations Investigative Counsel and questioned both Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh during Justice Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She served as the acting Maricopa County Attorney after the appointment of Bill Montgomery to the Arizona Supreme Court and previously served as the Chief Deputy County Attorney and Chief of the Special Victims Division.
