Enjoy two iconic works from the country’s premier Latino dance company: “CARMEN.maquia,” a modern take on Bizet’s passionate opera, and “Club Havana,” a virtuosic reimagining of a sizzling nightclub by Cuban-born choreographer Pedro Ruiz. Filmed locally at Mesa Arts Center. Watch on Passport.

 

Craft in America “Borders” and “Neighbors”Craft in America

Friday Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. & 9 p.m.

Explore the relationships and influences Mexican and American craft artists have on each other and on our cultures, featuring artists who practice traditional weaving and the create of paper jewelry. Then, travel to and from the U.S. and Mexico to explore the people, history, traditions and crafts, noting how aesthetics cross from one country to another and back again in an organic and ongoing cultural exchange. My Neighborhood: Pilsen

Sunday, Oct. 1, at 3 p.m.

Take an intimate street level look at what community engagement and activism has done for one Chicago neighborhood: Pilsen. Playing like a street mural come to life, six Pilsen residents share their personal stories to illustrate how the residents of this predominantly Mexican-American working class community have organized to address the societal issues facing their community, ranging from housing to health care to education and citizenship.

Take an intoxicating musical journey where past, present and future collide in joyful celebration. A U.S.-Cuba collaborative musical showcase, this performance-documentary provides context on the cultural scene in today’s Cuba through evocative performance segments. Born in Miami to Cuban parents,  Grammy-winning Raul Malo, bandleader of The Mavericks, hosts. Watch online.
