Journalists’ Roundtable: Increasing ICE activity, Governor Hobbs responds to Attorney General Mayes and more

More from this show

It’s Friday, which means it is time for another edition of Journalists’ Roundtable, where we discuss Arizona politics. This week, “Arizona Horizon” host Ted Simons was joined by Jeremy Duda and Jessica Boehm of Axios Phoenix, as well as Wayne Schutsky of KJZZ.

This week’s topics included:

  • Governor Katie Hobbs asks Attorney General Kris Mayes to retract ICE statements
  • ICE actions vs. Zipps
  • Shooting in Arivaca
  • Independent candidate enters Governor’s race
  • Phoenix light rail extension

Governor Katie Hobbs asks Attorney General Kris Mayes to retract ICE statements:

Jeremy Duda: “A lot of friction between Kris Mayes and an awful lot of people in the state due to some comments she made on 12 News talking about how folks might respond to ICE agents…Mayes took it a little further, though.”

Jessica Boehm: “What is notable is that I think Kris Mayes has tried to play it off as ‘oh Republicans saying that I did something wrong.’ But now you have the leader of her party…Katie Hobbs…saying that she should retract the statement, and that it wasn’t appropriate.”

Wayne Schutsky: “Some of the points Mayes made in that interview…aren’t wrong though, we do have a lot more guns in this state than I think in a lot of the other states that ICE has been…lots of people have guns in this state and not just Republicans, and that can create an uncomfortable situation when you have masked agents coming in, and potentially violated people’s rights.”
