In a Different Key: The Story of Autism begins with Donald Triplett, the first child to be diagnosed with autism, and follows the civil rights battles over the often misunderstood condition.
It showcases the stories of mothers who fought against medical institutions that blamed them and fathers who pushed scientists to find treatments.
It highlights many other stories as well: lawyers, doctors, scientists, and philosophers who explored the condition and how it should be handled.
This is also a story of fierce controversies, including the “epidemic” of autism, “facilitated communication,” and the use of LSD and electric shock therapy.
The book takes readers on a journey through the history and struggles of combating the stigma of autism.
