Former Congressmen Salmon and Hernandez on combatting disinformation

More from this show

Former Congressman Matt Salmon and former State Representative Daniel Hernández Jr. of the Democracy Defense Project joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss their efforts to combat election misinformation and the importance of restoring civility in politics.

Both men, Hernández a Democrat and Salmon a Republican, serve on the Democracy Defense Project board, which is releasing a new poll soon about how voters feel about election integrity issues. According to the poll, more than 60% of Arizonans are concerned about irregularity.

“It’s easy for me as a Democrat where most of my party and most of the Arizonans that I share identity with as a party believe the election wasn’t stolen,” Hernández said. “When we are talking about, ‘How do we break through?’ having folks like Matt Salmon, who is not liberal in any sense of the word, founding member of the freedom caucus when he was in Congress, is what we need to talk about.”

An estimated 87% of Republicans believe there is ballot stuffing occurring, and 88% of Republicans believe there is undocumented voting. Additionally, 59% of Democrats believe there is ballot stuffing occurring and 54% of Democrats believe there is undocumented voting.

“There is so much misinformation that is forced onto people in the last several years nonstop, and I think that certainly is part of the equation, but maybe after this election, things will cool down a little bit. That’s my hope and my prayer,” Salmon said.
