NOVA: Hidden Volcano Abyss and Arctic Sinkholes

Wednesday, Mar. 13 at 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Enjoy back-to-back episodes of NOVA. Check out a powerful volcanic eruption and learn how it caused a destructive tsunami. Then hang around to learn about the scientific phenomena of the Arctic’s sinkholes.

Hidden Volcano Abyss at 8:30 p.m.

In January 2022, one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history rocked the islands of Tonga. Join scientists as they investigate what caused the blast, how it spurred a devastating tsunami, and if another eruption could be imminent.

Artic Sinkholes at 9:30 p.m.

Colossal explosions shake a remote corner of the Siberian tundra, leaving behind massive craters. In Alaska, a huge lake erupts with bubbles of inflammable gas. Scientists are discovering that these mystifying phenomena add up to a ticking time bomb, as long-frozen permafrost melts and releases vast amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
