Keeping kids cool during school recess
Aug. 29
Those of us that live in Arizona can agree that we go back to school during the hottest part of the calendar year. It is hard for us to imagine how recess can be enjoyable in triple-digit weather, but somehow our children make the most of it.
If you are worried about your littles overheating, here are a four helpful tips from a mom of two school-aged children who also teaches elementary school.
- Freeze their water bottles. Or get a stainless steel one, and pack it with plenty of ice. Either way, ensure their water is always cold and available to them throughout the day. Their little bodies can easily dehydrate out in the heat.
- Consider a neck fan. First, consult your child’s teacher to ensure it is okay, but a neck fan is a handy tool I’ve seen in playgrounds being worn by both teachers on duty and students alike. Adding a little extra breeze can help them endure the heat.
- Apply sunblock. Get into the habit of applying sunblock in the mornings as most kids have early recesses, and also persuade your child to pack a hat they can wear outdoors. The more protection, the better! Additionally, encourage them to play in a shady spot whenever possible.
- Pack “cool” snacks. Freeze your child’s fruit or yogurts for an added cool treat that they can enjoy during their designated snack time.
