Paper snowflakes hanging from the ceiling

Winter craft: Design your own paper bag snowflakes

It’s the most wonderful time to craft! Liven up any room at your home or school with a fun winter craft of homemade snowflakes, but these are not just any ordinary snowflakes. To get started, you need a few simple materials you probably already have at home or in the classroom.

You will need:

  • Paper bags (size or color is up to you!): 7 of them create one snowflake
  • Single hole punch
  • Glue gun
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Tracing utensil

Directions:

  • An adult will need to hot glue 7 to 9 paper bags together, on top of one another, using a strip of glue from top to bottom and one across the flap (making a T), flap facing up.
  • Once you have your stack of bags glued together, have students draw a desired snowflake design on the top bag.
  • Use scissors to cut out the drawn designs. This part can get a little tricky using child-safe scissors, so an adult can help with this step.
  • Once the design is all cut out, open up the first bag to connect it with the last, watching the amazing pattern come to life.
  • Hot glue the top bag with the last bag to keep the open snowflake design.
  • Use a one-hole punch to add a hole for a string, and hang.

*Optional: If you used the brown paper bags, you can spray paint them white and add glitter for a magical touch!

My students were in awe when they came to school the next day and our student teacher had hung up these paper bag snowflakes for us. This winter craft has added such a festive feel to our learning environment.

What space would you add these merry snowflakes to? Do you have your own winter craft you enjoy this time of year? Share your creations with us at Arizona PBS KIDS on Facebook.
