David Quammen was raised in the suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Yale University.
In 1970, he published his first fiction novel, and then he went on to study literature at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.
He moved to Montana in 1973 and continued to write fiction novels, but was inspired to shift to nonfiction writing during his 15 years as a columnist for an active lifestyle magazine.
His affinity for science and nature has led him to write in-depth reports about traveling and exploration.
Quammen is married to Betsy Gaines and they live together with their two dogs in Bozeman, Montana.
In his free time, he enjoys cycling and skiing, and he continues to write as a contributing writer for National Geographic.
