Sesame Street celebrates Autism Acceptance Month

This April, Sesame Street is celebrating Autism Acceptance Month with an expansion of their “Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children” initiative. The expansion includes new resources, digital videos and a new episode featuring Julia, all with the aim to show that all kids can be superheroes.

Julia’s episode, titled “The Fluffster Kerfuffle,” is centered around learning to play well and how that may look different for Julia. The new episode will air on Monday, April 6 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Arizona PBS KIDS, channel 8.4. PBS KIDS is also available online at azpbs.org/kids and the PBS KIDS video app.

There are also new videos starring Julia, her family and other “Sesame Street” friends, with stories about playing well together and a story time with Julia’s mom, as well as an animation created in partnership with Exceptional Minds, a nonprofit company that prepares young adults on the autism spectrum for careers in animation and other digital arts fields.

Sesame Street has also created new resources and tips for parents on how to help children cope during this time of unprecedented uncertainty, all free and available in English and Spanish. These tips include how to explain COVID-19 for children that are and are not verbal, creating and maintaining a “for-now” normal routine at home, introducing and embracing change, and remembering to take care of yourself.
