Greektown: A trip to Greece

More from this show

No need to buy a plane ticket to Greece because Greektown brings all the best qualities of Greece and Greek culture right to Phoenix, Arizona.

Owner George Vassiliou said Greektown is a family-owned and operated Arizona restaurant. He said the restaurant provides the food and ambiance people fly across the world for.

Vassiliou said he recommends guest visiting for the first time try one of their classics. Vassiliou said the Spanakopita filo dough appetizer is a perfect dish to try because it is a classic Greek dish.

He said hospitality is a big part of Greek culture, and it carries over to the overall atmosphere of the restaurant. He said whether it be his two sons, his wife or himself, there is always someone to greet guests at the door.

Vassiliou said a beloved Greek tradition they practice at the restaurant is breaking plates in times of celebration or to ward of negative spirits.

“We try to make it happy, but yet at times we can get loud,” Vassiliou said. “We break dishes for freedom and happiness of the soul because that’s why Greeks break plates.”

Vassiliou said he is grateful for the support the Valley has shown the restaurant for the past 50 years. He said he always looks forward to the guests who make it a regular spot, growing the Greektown family.

Guest Molly Bohannon said she stumbled upon the best Greek food in town when searching for nearby Greek restaurants for dinner. Now, Bohannon visits Greektown regularly.

Bohannon said she usually starts off her visit with the calamari but opted for a new dish and tried the olives with feta recently.

Bohannon had the nightly special pasta for her entree, which was the Alfredo base. She said it was rich and creamy with the perfect amount of paprika to top it off.

For something sweet, Bohannon had the chocolate tart dessert that came with a piece of baklava, a chocolate cookie and fresh mousse.

Bohannon’s pro tip: Try a dish off their secret menu.
