Arizona Humane Society teams up with veterinary students
Jan. 23
Overcrowding in local shelters has become a problem, but the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) has come up with a creative solution to alleviate the issue, helping both animals and giving experience to veterinary students.
The AHS is teaming up with Western Maricopa Education Center, where they’ll be “loaning” out animals to be taken care of by students in the veterinary science program. Then, when the animals have been nursed back to good health, they’ll be brought back to the shelters to be put up for adoption. The program will be ongoing. We were joined by Kelsey Dickerson, Media Relations Specialist for the Arizona Humane Society, and Joseph Casados, Public Relations for the Arizona Humane Society, who provided details.
They can also address the new animal cruelty bill SB1047, introduced by AHS and Senator T.J. Shope amid a growing number of animal abuse cases across Arizona. The bill, if passed, would identify cruelty to companion animals as “failure to provide necessary medical attention, define food and water that are fit for consumption, ensure shelter is safe, and provide protection during extreme weather conditions.”
