Phoenix ZooLights offers sensory-friendly night with modifications

More from this show

ZooLights draws thousands of people to the Phoenix Zoo each year. But there is one special night set aside for those needing a more sensory-friendly experience. On Monday, Dec. 2, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., guests can have the ZooLights experience with some modifications to make it more sensory-friendly.

Joaquin Hidalgo, Marketing and Communications Coordinator at The Phoenix Zoo, joined “Arizona Horizon,” alongside Peach the Tenrec, to discuss the ZooLights event and provide details about the sensory-friendly night, including the unique modifications to create a more comfortable experience for all guests.

“We want to make sure that we tone down the lights…bring the noises down, and make the crowds a little bit lesser so, for folks that may have someone in the family who’s a little to sensitive to that,” Hidalgo said.

Modifications include smaller crowds due to limited tickets available for the evening (only 5,000 available each night), a quieter music volume throughout the experience, Lake Lights Show turned off to reduce flashing lights (lights will just be static) and the lights on the Arizona Trail will be very slow-moving.

The rest of the Zoo will have reduced light movement to the extent possible. Sensory Stations will be available throughout the experience, including fidgets, fur feathers and scales, building blocks, tiger touch and conservation, recess games and magnets.

“Sensory needs doesn’t necessarily mean you need reduced sensory,” Hidalgo said. “…sometimes you need something to do.”

The Phoenix Zoo is also offering the opportunity to meet Santa Claus, who came all the way from the North Pole to spend December 2 at the zoo.
