Hiking Arizona’s Biodiversity: From Cactus to Coatis
Dec. 19, 2024
In this episode of “Trail Mix’d,” we explore Arizona’s fascinating ecosystems. Arizona has the highest biodiversity of any inland state and is home to varying habitats. From marshes to mountains, tundras to grass plains, join our host Jayarr Steiner on a journey that highlights the biodiversity of Arizona.
First, we head south to Ramsey Canyon. The canyon is located where the Sonoran Desert, Rocky Mountains and Sierra Madre mountains all meet, creating an ecological crossroads that brings together a diverse array of wildlife. This wildlife can be seen throughout your hike, as you encounter animals such as wild turkeys, frogs and the elusive coati.
The canyon is protected by the Nature Conservancy, which strives to maintain the canyon’s unique ecosystems and all the lives that depend on it.
Next, we visit Catalina State Park, a park displaying the beauty of the Sonoran desert and its diverse flora and fauna.
Desert plants that have learned to survive in harsh conditions have evolved to be unique, with their own defenses such as the spines on cacti. Despite these defenses, the park is filled with vibrant colors; even desert plants feature different types of beautiful flowers.
The native flora of Arizona can create a garden that is both beautiful and functional, with many of the native plants having medicinal or culinary value that you can bring to your own yard.
The nature trail features signs along the path that teach you about the different plants you’re seeing, giving visitors the chance to more deeply understand the state’s native flora.
