The American Revolution: In Order to Be Free

Friday, January 9 at 8 p.m.

Ken Burns presents “The American Revolution,” a six-part series on the pivotal events that led to a bloody struggle that will engage more than two dozen nations and forever change the world.

American colonists oppose efforts by the British Crown and Parliament to seize greater control in North America, escalating simmering tension over land, taxes and sovereignty into violent confrontation. After protestors dump tea in Boston Harbor, the British government enacts martial law in Massachusetts. Fighting at Lexington and Concord ignites a war that will last eight years.

In this first episode of “The American Revolution,” political protest escalates into violence as war gives 13 colonies a common cause.
