It’s Friday, which means it’s time for another edition of Journalists’ Roundtable. This week, we were joined by Howie Fischer of Capitol Media Services and Laurie Roberts of “The Arizona Republic” and azcentral.com.

This week’s Journalists’ Roundtable topics included:

  • Fake electors pretrial hearing
  • Grand jury info exposed
  • No sanctions: Lake/Finchem attorneys
  • Gallego gets police endorsement
  • ESA money for dune buggies killed
  • Fountain Hills vs. ESA student athletes

Fake Electors Pretrial Hearing

Howie Fischer: “Everyone has an excuse about why this should be thrown out. But, the Attorney General is saying, ‘There are no politics in this, it’s very simple, here’s what the law says. You forged the paper, you sent the paper to Washington, you even used the state seal, which is a whole other crime there, and you intended to commit fraud.'”

Laurie Roberts: “There is such a thing as an alternate elector. We saw it 50 or 60 years ago in Hawaii when there was really a true question over who won the presidential election there. Pennsylvania and New Mexico both put into their proclamation, they didn’t just say ‘We are duly elected to cast votes for the guy who didn’t win,’ They went on to say that this is only for in the case that the results show that this particular candidate won.’ It is very clear in those cases that they were alternate electors, but that language was nowhere near this case.”

Grand Jury Info Exposed

Laurie Roberts: “One of the attorneys for Christina Bobb had apparently filed a portion of the grand jury transcript that included grand jury names. It’s legal in a place like Georgia because they make it legal to put those names out there, but it is illegal to do it here and Tucson attorney who is representing her certainly had to know that.”

Howie Fischer: “What they judge said is ‘We don’t think this was done intentionally, these attorneys are from out of state and representing people here,’ It was sort of a no-harm-no-foul, we aren’t going to punish you and we aren’t going to punish your client. That’s one, but come back and do it again and you will be seeing the inside of one of Maricopa counties most beautiful jails.”
