Right to abortion proposition passes
Nov. 7
Arizona Proposition 139, which dealt with abortion rights in our state, passed by a large margin in Arizona. This proposed amendment to Arizona’s constitution would create a right to abortion until fetal viability and allow abortions later to protect the life or mental or physical health of a pregnant woman.
As of Wednesday, November 13, 2024, the proposition passed in Arizona with 61.6% of voters saying yes to extending the right to abortion access in Arizona two years after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
Arizona is one of seven States that voted in favor of expanding or maintaining abortion access on Tuesday alongside Nevada, Colorado, Missouri, Montana, New York and Maryland
Chris Love of Arizona for Abortion Access joined Arizona Horizon to discuss the impact Prop 139 passing has on the state and why she thinks it passed with such a large margin.
“After the fall of Roe v. Wade, Americans by in large had decided that they wanted to have a say in whether or not abortion rights should be extended state by state after that ruling and here we have seen a groundswell of support since the beginning of the campaign and that carried through and that is reflected in the win number we had on Tuesday,” Love said.
