Trump selects Kash Patel for FBI as Biden pardons son, Hunter

President-elect Donald Trump announced his pick to head up the FBI is Kash Patel. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden announced he is pardoning his son, Hunter Biden.

Roy Herrera, Founding Partner of Herrera Arellano, joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss more about this recent news.

Patel, who served in Trump’s first administration, is a former public defender and is widely viewed as a controversial figure.

Putting Patel in charge of the FBI would result in forcing out the current director, Christopher Wray, who was appointed by Trump in 2017, and has three years left in his term.

“I think there are concerns are what he may do as the FBI director,” Herrera said. “He has indicated that he sort of believes in this deep state conspiracy…potentially political opponents at the FBI need to be fired…he also has indicated that the FBI could be used to go after political opponents.”

Patel has heavily criticized the FBI in the past and even called for the agency’s headquarters in Washington D.C. to be dismantled.

On Sunday, President Biden announced he was pardoning his son, Hunter, who faced sentencing for federal tax and gun convictions. President Biden went back on a promise he made to the public in the past to not pardon his son.

“He said in his statement…he expressed a very real emotion as a father in trying to protect his son,” Herrera said, “…so I think the easiest explanation is that.”

This pardon means Hunter won’t be sentenced for his crimes and rules out any possibility of being sent to prison. Hunter had been scrutinized in the past for his controversial business dealings as well.

“We have seen…the President misuse the pardon power, at least in my view,” Herrera said, “…but ultimately I think people are going to forget about that in some ways, and just think about the overall four years, when it comes to judging his overall legacy.”
