On this episode of “Arizona Horizon,” we sit down with Dr. Jeffrey Langland, Director of the Ric Scalzo Institute for Botanical Research, to discuss the second Arizonan confirmed to be on the hantavirus cruise ship. The person, confirmed by the Arizona Department of Health Services, was on the Dutch cruise ship, MV Hondius, at the time of the hantavirus outbreak. They will have an incubation period of six to eight weeks.
We also sit down with Dr. James Swain, Medical Director for the Research Institute’s Bariatrics and GI Research Division, to learn more about type II diabetes. HonorHealth Research Institute is looking to create a research facility to begin a new trial, which would be the first in the nation. The trial aims to modify the lining of the digestive tract with the use of steam energy to control type II diabetes without the use of drugs.
Finally, Steven R. Gonzales, Chancellor for the Maricopa Community Colleges, discusses how Maricopa Community Colleges are urging the state of Arizona to restore foundational operating aid. Accoriding to these colleges, they have received $0 in state operating aid since 2015. Districts exclusively rely on tuition and local property taxes to maintain their operations.
