When a clinical trial testing psychedelics to alleviate phantom limb pain came on the “Resolve to Solve” radar, Miles figured he better sign himself up! This episode gives us a deep dive into Miles’ experiences, the highs and lows of a clinical trial where he first received the placebo twice before finally being able to take the psilocybin.
He walks us through what he saw and felt during his treatment now that he has had more time to reflect on the experience. Miles can’t claim that he no longer experiences phantom pain, but he shares that he did get something quite remarkable out of the treatment, and he is better able to manage the pain.
In this episode, we look at the treatment options for phantom pain, which are shockingly scarce. Some are prescribed opioids, which, when combined with chronic pain, often lead to addiction. Some turn to ketamine, which can also be habit forming. The seizure medication gabapentin is sometimes prescribed with inconsistent results. Cannabis has been known to provide some relief, but ultimately, those who deal with phantom pain have no analgesic.
This study Miles participated in led by Dr. Amr Zidan can offer hope to those suffering from phantom pain.
