At-Home Learning Tips

Make the Days Special
Every child’s learning style is different, and as you find your new “normal” at home, you may see that structured schedules are not for everyone. Instead, try making a calendar with at least one new event listed on each day. Calendars teach important math skills like measuring time in different units such as days, weeks and months. Seeing what is coming up in the week may help restless kids have something to look forward to. Find more tips to make each day a little special.

ACTIVITY: Learn Skip Counting with a Homemade Cardboard City
In this activity, children will get creative create a nighttime city using discarded boxes and skip count the windows by two using a flashlight. Find the Spanish language version of this activity here.

ACTIVITY: Put on a Shadow Play
Shadows can be a fascinating discovery for a young child. In this activity, your child will use a flashlight to explore how blocking a light source can create different sizes of shadows, and then use this new knowledge of shadows to put on a shadow play.

ACTIVITY: Create Flashlight Constellations
Looking up at the stars can be relaxing. These star pictures, called constellations, have played key roles across cultures, from helping sailors navigate the oceans to helping storytellers craft traditional myths and folklore. In this activity, your child will observe stars and see how these points of light can be grouped together to form pictures.
