Arizona PBS to host ‘Jamming on the Job’ event at Arizona State Fair Oct. 4

Event to feature performances from Christina Sanabria and Andrés Salguero of 123 Andrés and Pierce Freelon, stars of the PBS KIDS Podcast ‘Jamming on the Job’

Arizona PBS, a community service of Arizona State University, today announced plans to partner with the Arizona State Fair to bring PBS KIDS podcast “Jamming on the Job” to families in Phoenix. The stars of “Jamming on the Job” will perform at 1 p.m. on Friday, October 4 as part of a special event taking place at the Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum. Families with children up to age eight are encouraged to attend this special event, held from noon to 4 p.m. and included with ticketed entrance to the fair. Gates open at noon, and participants are urged to come early to enjoy free activities from event partners.

“We thank the Arizona State Fair, PBS KIDS and the CPB-PBS Ready To Learn Initiative for teaming up with us to bring this fun, educational opportunity to families on October 4,” said Kimberly Flack, Senior Director of the station’s Educational Outreach efforts. “In addition to performances from the stars of ‘Jamming on the Job,’ we’ll have fun learning activities for kids to enjoy.”

As PBS KIDS explains, “Jamming on the Job” is a multi-generational, music-centered podcast for children ages four through eight and their families and introduces early learners to a wide variety of career paths while teaching essential life skills such as empathy and responsibility. As the stars of “Jamming on the Job,” Christina Sanabria and Andrés Salguero, the Grammy Award-winning kids’ music duo known as 123 Andrés, along with Pierce Freelon, the Grammy-nominated musician and voice of “BoomBox,” will perform songs from the podcast and offer a meet-and-greet for interested attendees. The performance will take place at 1 p.m. at the Arizona State Fair, inside Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum, followed by a meet and greet at 1:45 p.m.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees will be able to create their own “boombox job jam” about a future job, explore hands-on activities with professionals in various careers, meet some problem-solving characters from the PBS KIDS series “Work It Out Wombats!” and playtest some of the newest games from the PBS KIDS series, “Lyla in the Loop.”

Community partners will offer free crafts and resources as well. Partners include Arizona Department of Education Early Childhood Division, Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation, First Things First, Phoenix Union’s Franklin Fire and Police High School, PNC Bank “Grow Up Great” and Read On Communities, which is supported by Valley of the Sun United Way and United Way of Southern Arizona.

These activities are designed to support intergenerational learning and skills development for children in literacy, critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving, with a goal of enriching their learning and helping them succeed in school, work and life.

Arizona PBS is a Ready To Learn station, offering community events, workshops, camps and additional resources throughout the state with its partners, free for children ages two through eight, their teachers and families.
