Journalists’ Roundtable: Adelita Grijalva wins CD7 primary, AZ Dems oust chairman
July 18, 2025
It’s Friday, which means it is time for another edition of Journalists’ Roundtable. This week, “Arizona Horizon” host Ted Simons was joined by Camryn Sanchez of KJZZ, Dennis Welch of AZFamily and Wayne Schutsky of KJZZ.
This weeks topics included:
• Adelita Grijalva wins CD7 primary
• Kris Mayes joins ACA funds suit
• Democratic party chair ousted
• No Labels party candidates
Adelita Grijalva winning CD7 Primary:
Camryn Sanchez: “Adelita Grijalva ran away with it basically…Grijalva you know she has the name recognition she has the experience, and looks like she is going to be the de facto person.”
Dennis Welch: “I felt like some of the national media coming in here, it felt a little bit like they were rooting for a real horse race coming in at the end here…It’s an off year election, not a lot going on, people were trying to draw comparisons from Deja Foxx to Zohran Mamdani…it was a landslide victory for Adelita Grijalva, but it felt a little bit like the national media rooting for a bit of a narrative in a slow political season.”
Camryn Sanchez: “I think there is something to be said for if you have a lot of followers nationally and a lot of attention nationally, or on social media, that doesn’t translate to Congressional District seven showing up to the polls in an off-year for an obscure special primary”
Education Fund Suit:
Wayne Schutsky: “A bunch of education funding to all the states was frozen…$120ish million for Arizona and a small chunk of that was released today for some after-school programs.”
ObamaCare Suit:
Camryn Sanchez: “There’s a lot of lawsuits to keep track of with Mayes, these are just the latest two and presumably not the last ones that we are gonna see. She already had some success with the education one…it’s not clear yet on the medical one how successful she will be.”
Dennis Welch: “Here in Arizona they estimate it’s gonna cost hundreds of thousands of people their health care coverage…when you look at it from Mayes’ perspective it’s not only is this a good lawsuit because she believes in it but it makes good politics…I think it’s pretty good politics for an AG who’s up for reelection this year.”
Democratic Party Chair Ousted:
Wayne Schutsky: “It’s hard to ignore just the litany of controversy he was able to compile within just six months…the union representing party staff has accused him of negotiating in bad face, they are gonna file a complaint with the feds on that…Unions and Democrats usually go together like peanut butter and jelly, yet here they are fighting.”
