The Musical Instrument Museum celebrates 15 years
July 9
The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) is celebrating their 15th year of sharing a worldwide perspective on music. MIM boasts a collection of more than 7,500 instruments from more than 200 countries and territories.
Craig Culy, Executive Director of the Musical Instrument Museum, joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss the MIM’s summer events.
“MIM, is a really unique place. There’s nothing like it in the world. We represent music from all over the world, it’s one of those places that you come there, it’s for kids, it’s for adults, it’s for families,” Culy said.
The museum has galleries displaying their wide variety of instruments, including a gallery where visitors can try their hand at playing some of the instruments.
“The one thing we do differently than most places, we try not to have everything behind a vitrine, a glass case, right. We want it to be right there in front of people so they can see all angles of each of the instruments,” Culy said.
Culy also shared that there are audio elements that play for specific instruments as you approach them in the exhibit space.
MIM also hosts events and exhibitions to further perpetuate and share the works of different artists from around the world. They are currently hosting their summer programming, which includes talks and performances.
When it comes to best practices for visiting MIM, Culy shared that visitors should enter the space with no plan and go with the flow of what interests them.
“Just experience it, right. Now make sure you have enough time because everyone that comes there they think maybe an hour or two hours, it could be a whole day thing,” Culy said.
