ASU’s Global Futures Conversation on future ways to conserve

The Global Futures Conversation is a panel discussion that explores systems-based visions for the future of conservation. The panel is where climate science, culture, and public policy converge. Panelists will explore how transdisciplinary learning, storytelling, and global collaboration are reshaping the way we understand and protect Earth’s interconnected systems. Showcasing innovative educational models and a rising generation of conservation leaders, this session reveals how systems thinking can unlock transformative solutions and how today’s emerging voices are shaping a thriving, resilient future for the planet.

Peter Schlosser, Vice President and Vice Provost of Global Futures, Global Futures Laboratory, joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss more on the panel and the future of conservation.

“We are living in a world that changes very rapidly, so we have to look at conservation as a dynamic system that can follow the pace of change,” Schlosser said. “And can find ways to preserve the services of nature, the services that nature delivers to us and to the economy.”

According to Schlosser, people working in conservation need hands on learning, and work with practitioners, to be well equipped, and better prepared for the industry.

The message of conservation is the same across all age-ranges; however, the effects are not the same for each generation. For the younger generation, they will likely be here until the end of the century, so they will see more of the effects from change.

“We cannot say we are just banking on the youth to solve it, we have to work with them, we have to be willing to actually distribute decision power from our generation to the coming generations,” Schlosser said.

When it comes to conservation it’s not just a conversation of counting species. Looking into methodology, economical impact, the impact on climate change and many more are the factors scientists need to consider, and that are key for success.
