Journalists’ Roundtable: The latest on Arizona’s state tax code fight and more
Feb. 6
It’s Friday, which means it is time for another edition of Journalists’ Roundtable, where we discuss Arizona politics. This week, “Arizona Horizon” host Ted Simons was joined by Howie Fischer of Capitol Media Services, Camyrn Sanchez of KJZZ, and Jim Small of Arizona Mirror.
This week’s topics included:
- Tax conformity 2.0
- Swoboda switching races
- Surprise ICE facility
- Governor Hobbs’ “Know Your Rights” website
- Heap vs. Board of Supervisors
Tax Conformity 2.0:
Howie Fischer: “The governors office prepared…some tax forms, based on what congress did…turns out A, the Republicans don’t like it, and B, if you actually used those forms, the odds are decent you’re gonna have to file an amended return…meanwhile something like 400,000 people have already filed their returns, and just hoping and praying that they don’t have to do it again.”
Jim Small: “There’s been a lot of mixed messaging. I think that there were some missed opportunities to try to get this done…A, before the legislative session, so it wouldn’t be a main issue…and B, before people start filing their taxes.”
Camryn Sanchez: “There’s some speculation of what if we move the budget up, and do the budget as soon as possible, but that’s somewhat unrealistic because Democrats have complained about that in years prior…I think the pressure is just going to build.”
Swoboda switching races:
Jim Small: “That complicated things…she jumped into that race early…and was hoping to kinda box out… I’m sure that everybody is trying to figure out what the landscape looks like…path to victory for Gina Swoboda.”
Howie Fischer: “I want to see whether Trump’s endorsement in CD1 follows me into the secretary of state.”
