Latino data hub offers insight into communities

More from this show

The UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute has developed a new data platform to provide free access to bilingual data covering Latinos’ well-being, voting, housing, employment, and education. The goal is to empower leaders to make decisions based on data and help strengthen the Hispanic community.

In this episode, we learned more from Rodrigo Dominguez-Villegas, Director of the Latino Data Hub.

“It is incredibly user-friendly,” Dominguez-Villegas said. “Users can select over 1 of 130 different indicators. They’re able to see the data point of that specific indicator at different geographic levels.”

Users can also see how members of the Latino community are doing compared to other population groups, including differences with Latino subgroups. The hub is the first of its kind; there isn’t another data platform like this yet.

“We noticed that there is a big gap in the way Latinos are represented in data platforms that would make all of our groups visible,” Dominguez-Villegas said.

Dominguez-Villegas said Latinos are frequently lumped into one category, but they know that their community is incredibly diverse.
