Improving HIV prevention in Latinx communities

More from this show

A major breakthrough in HIV prevention could change the way we protect communities most impacted by the virus.

Latino LGBTQ+ communities are constantly fighting barriers to get care, cultural stigma and a lack of awareness. All of this still stands in the way of HIV prevention for the LGBTQ+ community and especially the Latinx community. But a new twice-a-year injectable is offering another option beyond the daily pill.

On this episode of “Horizonte,” Catherine Anaya is joined by Mark Moeremans to talk about what this could mean for Arizona’s Latino LGBTQ+ community. Moeremans is the CEO of Spectrum Medical Care Center, an LGBTQ+ health care clinic serving and making strides within our community.

“We have to overcome those challenges to inform people that this is still an issue, that HIV cases are still consistently high, that this is an issue that affects this community disproportionately and there is an option available and here’s how you access it,” Moeremans said.

A mission-driven leader, Moeremans said he is dedicated to advancing LGBTQ+ inclusive health care. As a member of the community himself, Moeremans brings both lived experience and a career built on creating social impact to his role.

Moeremans’ explained his expertise lies in combining business acumen with strategic management to build sustainable, high-performing organizations that eliminate barriers to care and foster pride among both patients and staff. With more than 27 years of legacy behind the organization, Moeremans said he is committed to carrying that mission forward with compassion and growth.

“We need to continue to do our part to get into the communities that need it most and to inform and educate in a way that sticks,” Moeremans said.
