Half-hour film spotlights Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP)

Arizona PBS is premiering a half-hour, locally produced documentary film about the Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP) this Friday, October 31, 2025. Titled “Finding a Voice: Fostering Indigenous Composers,” the film will have its broadcast debut on Friday night at 8 p.m. on Arizona PBS’ primary channel, 8.1. “Finding a Voice” will also be available to stream on Friday via the azpbs.org website or the PBS App.

Co-founded by Clare Hoffman and Brent Michael Davids, NACAP is an initiative of the Grand Canyon Music Festival that aims to nurture the talents of young, Native American high school musicians, providing levels of access to music education that are scarce in rural areas.

“Part of our mission at Arizona PBS is to serve as one of the state’s leading storytellers, and we’re honored that the Native American Composer Apprentice Project trusted us with their story,” said Arizona PBS General Manager Scott Woelfel.

Following the broadcast premiere of “Finding a Voice” on October 31, 2025, Arizona PBS will be re-airing it at 10 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2025. The film was produced by Central Sound at Arizona PBS, the station’s audio and media production team. Starting in the fall of 2023, the Central Sound team began following NACAP’s resident quartet, the Catalyst Quartet, as they traveled throughout the Navajo Nation to schools involved in the project.

In addition to capturing day-to-day activities and the impact of the project, the team also conducted interviews with students, performers and composers, like Raven Chacon, winner of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Music, and Michael Begay, a NACAP alumnus. Featuring original music composed by NACAP students, “Finding a Voice” showcases the students’ talent and creativity while also underscoring the impact that music education can have.

Learn more about NACAP by visiting their website. For performances of NACAP student compositions, listen to “Arizona Encore,” a Central Sound at Arizona PBS production that showcases classical music performances of both local and touring artists, recorded live at venues throughout the state.
