Trailblazing Women: Solo and Group Adventurers

More from this show

Just north of major cities like Phoenix and Tempe, host Jayarr Steiner takes us on a hike in this episode of season 2 of “Trail Mix’d.” We travel to the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell to hike with some incredible women who are carving their own paths in the hiking community. Along the trail, they share their stories and insight on how hiking has shaped who they are. We also examine the merits of hiking solo or with a group and learn you can find the spirit of adventure within yourself or your community.

Our trek in this episode begins at the Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world and an incredible location to learn about Arizona history, geology and to enjoy an inspiring and challenging hike.

When you think of Arizona hiking trails, this one immediately comes to mind. The Bright Angel trail leads right into the Grand Canyon. We hike the Bright Angel Trail from the top of the canyon down over 3,000 feet to the recently renamed Havasupai Gardens. With its beautiful views, its no wonder its one of the most popular trails. There are plenty of drinking water, restrooms and shade along the trail.

We also visit Yavapai Point Trail, a well-loved trail for hikers and horseback riding. The trail has beautiful views of Lake Pleasant, a man-made lake north of Phoenix surrounded by the desert. Keep an eye out! You might see some of the many animals that call Yavapai Point home.
