‘Pompeii: The New Dig’ unveils ancient mysteries

Episode 1 airs Wednesday, May 15 at 9 p.m.

This new landmark three-part series follows the most extensive archaeological excavation in Pompeii for a generation. Nearly two years in the making, with exclusive access to the dig and the all-Italian team of archaeologists, the series follows the excavation of an entire city block, Insula 10, in the north of the city.

This series marks the most significant archaeological exploration of Pompeii in recent decades. 

Episode 1 – The Bodies

“Pompeii: The New Dig” provides exclusive access to a groundbreaking excavation of an entire city block. The series delves into the daily lives of Pompeii’s residents, revealing both their everyday activities and the horrors they faced during one of history’s most infamous disasters. Highlights include the discovery of a 2,000-year-old fresco that strikingly resembles a pizza, discovered in Pompeii’s Regio IX, close to where this iconic dish originated.

The documentary features an all-Italian team of archaeologists and emphasizes authentic, locally-led insights, offering viewers a unique opportunity to witness new, thrilling finds that add depth to the incredible story of Pompeii.

Episode 2 – Escape

Dive into the past with Episode 2 of “Pompeii: The New Dig,” where archaeologists uncover layers of history beneath the storied ashes of Pompeii. This episode continues the thrilling exploration of one of the world’s most fascinating archaeological sites, revealing new findings that offer deeper insights into the daily lives of Pompeii’s residents before the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
