Horizonte: Young author’s book tells story of separation from undocumented parents

“Horizonte” examines issues of particular interest to Arizona’s Hispanic community. Anaya interviews experts on subjects from public policy to education to arts and culture, with new voices, new perspectives and new energy.”

In this episode, Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez shares her story on being separated from her undocumented parents when she was just 15 years old and living in Tucson. They had to return to Mexico because of immigration policies.

Left on her own, Gutierrez had to find shelter and pursue her education, and eventually graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2018. Gutierrez worked in finance for a time and now works for Meta. At one point, she brought her brother to live with her to help raise him.

Now, Gutierrez has written a book about her life experiences titled, “My Side of the River.”
