New show, ‘Carnival of the Animals,’ coming to PBS Kids
Monday, November 16 at 8:30 a.m.
“Carnival of the Animals” is calling.
PBS KIDS invites children of all ages and their families to experience a favorite classical music piece in a whole new, playful way with “Carnival of the Animals.”
The vibrant, 2D animated special features French composer Camille Saint-Saëns’ full iconic composition recorded live by the renowned, multiple Grammy®-winning conductor, Gustavo Dudamel, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, recorded at the Hollywood Bowl. Aligned with the PBS KIDS Arts Learning Framework for Music, the special provides kids ages 2 to 8 with an opportunity to experience, connect with and respond to orchestral music, regardless of their prior experience.
The half-hour special, which includes a short introduction narrated by Gustavo’s son, 15-year-old Martín Dudamel, lets the music speak for itself, unfolding in a colorful town inhabited by animals where everyone is getting ready for a carnival parade. When Big Lion’s crown is stolen, a young hero embarks on an epic quest to save the day.
“Carnival of the Animals” whimsical 2D animation is enhanced with beautiful, hand-painted watercolor backgrounds and tactile textures along with clever orchestral elements and props that add an extra layer of imaginative fun to the story. Without dialogue, the music itself guides young viewers through atmospheric stylized landscapes, shapes and patterns, setting the mood for the characters, with joyful physical and visual comedy taking center stage throughout.
“Carnival of the Animals” premieres at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, November 16, 2026.
