‘Call the Midwife’ returns: Season 8 airs Sunday nights

Your favorite nuns are back.

The wildly successful “Call the Midwife” series begins its eighth season with new drama, comedy and uplifting tales every Sunday night at 7 p.m. through May 19.

At the start of Season 8, it’s spring of 1964 and everyone is excited for the Queen’s Royal Birth. With social change on the horizon locally and globally, the additions of two new Sisters sent to live and work with the team in Poplar makes Nonnatus House feel full again. The nuns and nurses face a variety of challenging issues such as interracial adoption, cleft palate and sickle cell. For one, romance may be on the horizon.

March 31: Join Nonnatus House in welcoming two new nuns. Valerie deals with an unexpected and shocking case. The other midwives must handle a complicated multiple birth.

April 7: Lucille assists an elderly hoarder struggling to keep her independence, while Sister Hilda and the team work hard to help a Ghanaian family with an undiagnosed illness.

April 14: At the clinic, the Turners oversee a measles vaccination trial while the team prepares for the Whitsun bank holiday. Valerie helps a struggling mother accept her son’s birth defect.

April 21:  Witness the team’s attempt to reunite an estranged mother and daughter who are both pregnant. Trixie’s friend is devastated to discover she is pregnant.

April 28:  Trixie cares for a young woman who is diagnosed with an intersex condition. A pregnant woman’s husband begins experiencing inexplicable pain similar to her symptoms.

May 5:  Lucille cares for an unmarried teen mother and Valerie helps her grandmother with an embarrassing medical problem. Mother Mildred tries to help, but ruffles feathers everywhere she goes. Nurse Crane’s back troubles return with a vengeance.

May 12: Mother Mildred decides it’s time for Sister Frances to attend her first solo birth. Trixie consoles a patient who discovers she has gonorrhea. Sister Monica Joan follows Great Britain’s Olympic hopes. Watch online.

May 19: The Turners’ emotions over May’s impending adoption spill over. Sister Hilda digs deep to give a terminally ill patient her final wish. Valerie and Trixie must testify in a grueling court case, while Fred and Reggie keep secrets from each other. Watch online.
