Enjoy classic musicals on New Years Day

Ring in the new year with Arizona PBS and some beloved classic musicals, starting at 9 a.m. on Jan. 1. 

9 a.m.: “Great Performances: The Sound of Music”

Beloved by generations of audiences worldwide, “The Sound of Music” tells the inspiring true story of the von Trapp Family Singers and their escape for Austria during the rise of Nazism. Rogers and Hammerstein’s 1959 hit stage musical garnered five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the blockbuster 1965 movie adaptation won five Oscars, including Best Picture. “Great Performances” presents the 2015 live U.K. broadcast version starring Kara Tointon as Maria, Julian Ovenden as Captain von Trapp, Katherine Kelly as Baroness Schraeder, Alexander Armstrong as Max, and Maria Friedman as Mother Abbess. Cinematically photographed by adjoining sound stages, the production offers a more naturalistic interpretation o this great classic of the American musical theater.

11:30 a.m.: “Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2”

No one could have guessed on Oct. 8, 1985, when “Les Miserables” opened in London at the Barbican Theatre it would become a worldwide phenomenon, but audiences embraced it from the start, creating a “people’s musical” that has played in 42 countries and has been seen by nearly 60 million people. In 2010, the legendary musical celebrated its 25th birthday, and to mark the occasion, producer Cameron Mackintosh staged an extraordinary concert at the O2 Arena in London.

2:30 p.m.: “Great Performances: Jesus Christ Superstar Live”

“Great Performances: Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” showcases the iconic rock opera featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. “Great Performances” presents the 2018 Emmy Award-winning production. The musical recounts the biblical story of the final weeks of Jesus’ life, focusing on the relationship between Jesus and Judas. When Judas turns on his teacher, his fateful decision sets both men on a path to tragedy.
