Democratic Arizona Congressional District 4 candidate Kai Newkirk joined Ted Simons as a part of our “Candidates in Conversation” series to discuss his campaign and the issues he aims to target.

Newkirk is running against Greg Stanton in the primary election. Looking ahead, Newkirk shared what he envisions for the next few months of his campaign.

“I’m running to flip the tables in what I believe is a corrupt and authoritarian status quo, and I think our incumbent has not stood up to that,” Newkirk said.

Newkirk also shared his thoughts on the actions of Immigration Customs Enforcement and legislation surrounding immigration.

He criticized some elected officials and how they voted on the Laken Riley Act, a piece of legislation that requires mandatory detention for undocumented immigrants that have been charged with, arrested or convicted of certain offenses.

“We trust undocumented immigrants to care for our children, to care for our elders, to grow and serve our food, to build our homes and yet somehow not to have the full rights. Be protected in this country and be equal citizens,” Newkirk said.

Newkirk has been involved in many protests. He has been arrested over 25 times for nonviolent civil disobedience. Newkirk says that, “they are a badge of honor, not a mark of shame”.

As for being a representative for the 4th district, Newkirk shared why he believes that this will appeal to those living in the district.

“They want someone who’s going to fight and stand up to Trump’s authoritarianism, and I have a record of standing up to injustice. Even being willing to put my freedom and safety on the line,” Newkirk said.

Newkirk stated that he is open and willing to compromise when disagreements arise.

“I’ve worked with people that disagree with me on issues. I love that, because it’s an opportunity to connect and find our common ground as human beings and people who share interests,” Newkirk said.
