Ocean of Light Exhibit

More from this show

We’ll take you to the Ocean of Light: Submergence – A Squidsoup Project exhibit that immerses the viewer in an ocean of light. It uses light-based data visualization to create an augmented reality environment.

TED SIMONS: AN EXHIBITION CALLED OCEAN OF
LIGHT TAKES AN OVERWHELMING
AMOUNT OF DATA THAT WE'RE
BOMBARDED WITH AND TURNS IT INTO
ART.
THE EXHIBIT IS THE FIRST TIME
THAT OCEAN OF LIGHT HAS BEEN
DISPLAYED AT A MUSEUM.
THE PRODUCER SHAWNNA FISHER
GIVES US A LOOK.
SARA COCHRAN: IT'S REALLY JUST AN
EXPERIENCE OF BEAUTY AND MOVING
BEAUTY, WHICH IS DELIGHTFUL.
SHAWNNA FISHER: OCEAN OF LIGHT IS A SENSORY
SMORGASBORD, FILLING BOTH YOUR
EYES AND EARS WITH AN EXPERIENCE
UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE.
SARA COCHRAN: I THINK THAT THE EXPERIENCE
STARTS WHEN YOU HEAR A LITTLE
BIT OF A SORT OF NOISE THAT IS
SOMEWHERE BETWEEN MUSIC AND AN
INTRIGUING SOUND.
THEN THERE'S AN EXPECTATION AND
UNDERSTANDING OF CHANGING LIGHT.
SHAWNNA FISHER: THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SAYS
THE EXHIBITION IS MEANT TO BE A
WAY OF VISUALIZE THE DATA IN OUR
LIVES, THAT ALL OF THE DATA WE
TAKE IN EVERY DAY BECOMES
MONOTONOUS AND ALMOST WHITE
NOISE.
WHEN THAT DATA COMES IN THE FORM
OF THOUSANDS OF LIGHTS AND
MUSIC, IT BECOMES A MOVIE OF OUR
LIFE.
SARA COCHRAN: IT'S VERY INTERESTING TO SEE
HOW THE PIECE IS ALLOWING PEOPLE
TO MAKE THEIR OWN INTERPRETATION
AND REPRESENTATION OF THAT
INTERPRETATION WITHIN THE SPACE.
SHAWNNA FISHER: OCEAN OF LIGHT IS THE WORK OF
THE U.K. GROUP KNOWN AS SKID
SOUP.
THEY'RE A COLLECTIVE MADE UP OF
ARTISTS AND ACADEMICS.
SARA COCHRAN: IT'S NATURAL TO WANT TO DEVELOP
IN THE DIGITAL REALM.
NEW EXPRESSIONS ARE VERY OLD
IDEAS.
I THINK THE INTEREST IN DIGITAL
IS THE INTEREST IN A LARGER
WORLD, THE LARGER WORLD THAT
WE'RE A PART OF.
SHAWNNA FISHER: THE PIECE TOOK SEVERAL DAYS
TO INSTALL.
SARA COCHRAN: IT'S AN INSTALLATION THAT
FLOATS ALMOST MAGICALLY IN THE
SPACE.
SHAWNNA FISHER: THE TECHNICAL SET-UP TOOK
ABOUT A WEEK.
THE ENTIRE OCEAN OVERLIGHT
EXPERIENCE LASTS ABOUT 15
MINUTES WITH THE LIGHTS AND
MUSIC GROWING IN INTENSITY.
ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING
PARTS, THE EXHIBIT, IS
INTERACTIVE.
AS YOU WALK THROUGH THE LIGHT,
YOU INFLUENCE THEIR PATTERN.
SARA COCHRAN: IT IS SO MUCH FUN TO WATCH
PEOPLE PLAYING IN THE SPACE.
THAT IS A REAL JOY, JUST TO SEE
PEOPLE HAVING FUN.
SHAWNNA FISHER: AND COCHRAN, HERSELF, ALSO
ENJOYS GETTING IN ON THAT FUN.
SARA COCHRAN: I REALIZE THAT I LOVE BEING
WITHIN THE PIECE.
I LOVE PLAYING WITHIN THE PIECE.
IT'S JUST A REALLY MOVING AND
BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE.
TED SIMONS: OCEAN OF LIGHT RUNS UNTIL
SEPTEMBER 24TH.
THE MUSEUM IS HOLDING A SELFIE
CONTEST IN JULY AND AUGUST.
YOU CAN SUBMIT A SELFIE TAKEN
INSIDE THE EXHIBITION.
BE SURE TO USE THE HASHTAG OCEAN
OF LIGHT.
ENTER THE CONTEST, AND YOU CAN
WIN 100 BUCKS.
