The fall of Assad’s regime and its global impact

More from this show

The collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria promises to be a major shake-up in the power dynamics of the Middle East.

Professor Daniel Rothenberg, Center Co-Director and Professor of Practice for the School of Politics and Global Studies at ASU, joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss the global implications.

“I think the thing to focus on at the moment is the fall of the Assad regime is a transformative event…it’s something that is worth celebrating” Rothenberg said. “Here’s a regime that was despicable in it’s use of cruel violence to repress it’s people for so long.”

Rothenberg emphasized the regime’s extensive use of torture against it’s own people by using chemical weapons and imprisoning them.

“The context in the region as changed quite a bit, and that has to do a lot of why Assad fell,” Rothenberg said.
