The independent bookmobile

Drawing on her time as an Air Force spouse, Petra Sherbin-Fox created The Lit Twis’t, a mobile bookstore. The Lit Twis’t specializes in honoring the voices of Black women and female authors of color, creating a space where their stories are celebrated and appreciated.

Through collaborations with local Black-owned businesses, thoughtfully curated events and immersive experiences, The Lit Twis’t aims to make literature a part of people’s lives.

Sherbin-Fox joined “Arizona Horizon” to explain more about this independent bookmobile.

Sherbin-Fox shared why she believes it is important to highlight Black women authors at The Lit Twis’t.

“Highlighting black women authors particularly was really important because of the lack of representation in publishing. The difficulty when I’d go looking for at the Barnes & Noble and the local bookstores, I had to sift through it looking for those particular books. So I wanted to make it easier and also increasing the visibility for these books,” Sherbin-Fox said.

Part of the mission of The Lit Twis’t is to create change, Sherbin-Fox shared a bit about how this is being implemented during their time Arizona.

“We are obviously talking about literacy, but we also build community here. Literacy is one of those things that in the Black community is really important and that was not something we were given early on in our experiences. And so for our ancestors, for our healing it is really important to provide literacy wherever we can. And so, not only are we you know talking about books but we’re able to connect with others, have relatability, share experiences and stories, and create a really, a safe space,” Sherbin-Fox shared.
