The Detour Company Theatre to Perform in June
June 3
The Detour Company Theatre provides theatre training and performance experiences for adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. It gives them authentic opportunities to develop artistry, demonstrate courage and collaboration, experience joy and participate in the sharing of musical theatre with the entire community. Last season they had 62 performers with disabilities, sold 5000+ pay-what-you-wish tickets, and had 16 full-scale theatre performances in 7 different venues across Arizona.
Their next two shows coming up in June. The first show is A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Grand Canyon University, June 13th at 7pm and at Phoenix College, June 20th at 7pm, and June 21st at 3pm. The second show is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Grand Canyon University, June 14th at 7pm, and June 15th at 5pm. It will then be shown at Phoenix College, June 21st at 7pm, and June 22nd at 3pm.
Simon Ridley, Executive Director at the Detour Company Theatre, joined Arizona Horizon to discuss further about the Detour Company Theatre.
“The biggest thing they notice from our performances is the audience response. The most common response we get from audience members, talk to them after the show is surprise and delight. We don’t even realize how much we have built up expectations about people with disabilities until we see them in roles that aren’t typical in our world. What’s lovely is people see the shows, they don’t know what to expect, and then their expectations are exceeded,” said Ridley regarding the cast and crew’s reaction after their shows.
