Oct. 20
Matt Giordano is the new Chief of Police for the City of Phoenix, having been officially selected in July 2025 and sworn in on August 28, 2025. He returns to the department where he spent 23 years, retiring as a Commander, before serving in the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Giordano’s appointment marks the return of a permanent chief to the Phoenix Police Department since 2022.
Matt Giordano joined “Arizona Horizon” to talk about his new position and returning to the Phoenix PD Department.
“I was not unhappy when I left the department, I was in a great place,” Giordano said, “…and then this opportunity came open, and I thought, why not…why not go back and end my career wearing this uniform…so here I am.”
After retiring as a commander, he then went on to work at the Arizona P.O.S.T. (Peace Office Standards and Training Boards At the P.O.S.T., he trained future officers of the law, where he spent over six years with the office.
“I have 23 years of what Phoenix P.D. did…how we trained, how we disciplined, how we held officers accountable,” Giordano said, “…then I got to see it from the sheriffs’ perspective, totally different…I’m taking the best of all of that and bringing it back to the Phoenix police department.”
Giordano emphasized how important it is for the department to provide the right training, experience, and skills to do their job effectively.
“We need to ensure that we point out our clear expectations on the front end, and point out where they fail to meet those expectations, and then figure out why,” Giordano said, “…or is it a lack of training, or lack of skills, lack of knowledge, and we can provide that…we want everyone to be successful.”
