Longtime congressman, human rights champion and civil rights hero John Lewis passed away Friday, July 17, 2020.
On the July 20 edition of Arizona Horizon, we heard from local leaders as we reflect on the legacy and accomplishments of Rep. Lewis. The conversation included:
- Rep. Raul Grijalva, who served in the House of Representatives with Lewis for 17 years
- Roy Tatem Jr., president of East Valley NAACP
- Debora Colbert, interim director of Black Mothers Forum
Cronkite News reporters reached out to more Arizona leaders who knew and admired Rep. Lewis.
“What do you say when somebody who is living, breathing history leaves? My first thought was who’s going to carry on the legacy?” asked Flagstaff Mayor Coral Evans. She said that even though this “freedom rider” has died, someone needs to pick up the torch from Lewis.
PBS NewsHour Weekend reflected on Rep. Lewis’ accomplishments and legacy this Saturday.
Arizona PBS will also re-air the documentary “John Lewis: Get in the Way” on Thursday July 23 at 11 p.m. Follow his journey from the Selma March, where Lewis came face-to-face with club-wielding troopers and exemplified non-violence, to his unofficial position as the conscience of Congress.
