“The New York Times” bestselling author Allison Brennan recently published her new book, “Whisper Creek.” The story is centered around one Texas family’s fight to protect their land from both human enemies and Mother Nature after a husband’s sudden death.
Brennan, a local Arizona author, joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss what inspired her to write the novel.
Brennan’s body of work features over 50 titles. She says what helped her to reach that milestone is the changing things up to feel that spark in creating her work.
She also prides herself on doing hands-on research that brings a more realistic edge to her books, like participating in S.W.A.T drills or visiting a prison. For “Whisper Creek”, Brennan interviewed farmers to understand their day-to-day life and how one interviewee ultimately helped her to discover an integral part of her novel.
“He helped me so much and gave me a line that said, grow or die. And it kind of became the theme of the book, and he didn’t realize it. He was like, ‘I really didn’t help you’. I said, ‘No! Brian you totally helped me’,” Brennan said.
But a greater theme of family is not only prevalent in Brennan newest novel, but also the ones that came before it. Brennan says that it is an element that readers like because they, “want that human connection and they want it in their books and they want it in their lives”.
Brennan’s next book “I’ll Be Watching You”, is coming out this fall and it is set in Phoenix. After a chance conversation with a judge about his family’s roots in the city, Brennan found that spark for her next novel.
Her next novel centers around a Irish-Mexican family who works together as private investigators in the Sunnyslope area. “I’ll Be Watching You” will be available for purchase on September 15, 2026.
