“Arizona Horizon’s” Ted Simons hosts a bipartisan discussion that delves into a number of topics, including why it takes so long to count ballots in Arizona and what can be done about it. This special is presented in partnership with the ASU Mechanics of Democracy Laboratory.

Meet our panelists

Adrian Fontes
Adrian Fontes serves as Arizona’s Secretary of State, focusing on election integrity and creating an easier voting system for registered voters. Fontes served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He then became a prosecutor with the Denver District Attorney’s office and moved here to serve in the same position for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Fontes also led the International Prosecution Unit at the Arizona Attorney General’s Office and became the Maricopa County Recorder in 2016.

Bill Gates
Bill Gates is the Director of the ASU Mechanics of Democracy Laboratory, an administration that focuses on the process of elections. Gates is also a Professor of Practice at ASU Watts College of Public Service of Community Solutions. Gates currently dedicates time to serve as a member of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, and prior to that, he served on the Phoenix City Council for seven years.

Gabriella Cázares-Kelly
Gabriella Cázares-Kelly has served as Pima County’s Recorder since November of 2020 and is the first Native American to hold an elected office in Pima County. Her office focuses on early voting, voter registration and document recording for Pima County. Cázares-Kelly is a former educator and community organizer. She also serves as co-founder of a grassroots community organization called Indivisible Tohono, which provides opportunities for civic engagement within the Tohono O’odham Nation.

Thomas Galvin
Thomas Galvin has represented District 2 for the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors since November 2022. In the past, Galvin worked on election integrity efforts for Arizona’s Republican Party. He focuses on supporting law enforcement officers, keeping taxes low and promoting economic development. Galvin holds membership positions on the Greater Phoenix Economic Council Board of Directors, PHX East Valley Partnership Board of Directors and the Canada-Arizona Business Council.

Debbie Lesko
Elected in 2024, Debbie Lesko represents District 4 on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. Lesko served in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from May 2018 until January 2025. She also held positions in the Arizona Senate as Senate President Pro-Tempore and Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Lesko has served on committees focused on energy, homeland security, space, science and the COVID-19 pandemic.
