The Phoenix Library celebrates National Library Card Month

More from this show

September is National Library Card Month– and there is so much you can have access to with a library card. The Phoenix Library system is not just about books, audiobooks, and DVDs. There are classes offered to adults about business and other things, and for kids. You can also check out a Culture Pass, which allows you free entrance to museums and other places around the Phoenix area.

Lee Franklin, Community Relations Director at Phoenix Public Library, joined “Arizona Horizon” to discuss the perks and benefits of having a library card.

“Every year we do our amazing library card campaign,” Franklin said, “…for sure in September, often into October.”

You can visit the Phoenix Public Library website to get started with registering for your “E-Card.” You then fill out some information verifying that you are a resident of Maricopa county, as the cards are free for Maricopa residents.

“Within a few minutes you’ll have access to literally thousands of items to read,” Franklin explained.

She also mentioned that you are able to stream music, movies, have access to newspapers from around the world, and take classes online.

“We still see that our physical books, the traditional come in and take something off the shelf,” Franklin said, “…people still want that experience as well and so they are equally as popular, and they are not going away.”

Franklin emphasized how the library’s collection of e-books, is continuing to grow with the increasing demand for such products, and also offers a variety of alternative options for readers. While the demand is growing, physical books will not go out of style.

“We want to assure everybody we are not getting out of the business of physical books,” Franklin emphasized.
