Journalists’ Roundtable: AZ attorney general v. Kalshi, and more

More from this show

It’s Friday, which means it is time for another edition of Journalists’ Roundtable, where we discuss Arizona politics. This week, “Arizona Horizon” host Ted Simons was joined by Jeremy Duda and Jessica Boehm from Axios Phoenix, and Mark Brodie from KJZZ Radio.

This week’s topics included:

  • AG vs. Kalshi
  • Reim appointed to the House
  • Fontes vs. Dems and GOP
  • Dueling ESA reform initiatives
  • Lake vs. Journalists put on leave
  • Chávez abuse allegations

AG vs. Kalshi:

Jeremy Duda: “…you can bet on anything. You can bet on whether the United States is going to attack Cuba…you can bet on Arizona elections…Attorney General Kris Mayes has a bit of a problem with that, and she’s filed 20 misdemeanor criminal charges against this website…a lot of states are grappling with how to regulate these.”

Mark Brodie: “It’s against Arizona law to bet on elections…there’s also, in addition to the legal questions. There are just some sort of, like, moral ethical questions…There’s something different between…betting on whether you know it would be too cloudy to see the sunset or what the weather is going to be…versus if we’re going to war.”

Jessica Boehm: “States have tried to regulate these things…these groups have said is we are regulated by the federal government…the Trump administration has sided with them, and said, yeah that is our entity…what this is probably going to lead to is a probably eventually a Supreme Court case where finally decide is this betting, or is this a contract, and an investment opportunity.”

Mark Brodie: “It’ll be interesting to see if the courts say, well, actually, if you’re operating in these states, you need to abide by state laws, or if not.”
