Democratic Minority Leader Priya Sundareshan addresses a resolution to Kris Mayes ICE statement
Feb. 5
GOP Senator John Kavanagh introduced a resolution calling on Attorney General Kris Mayes to resign over her comments about ICE and stand your ground laws.
State Senator Democratic Minority Leader Priya Sundareshan joined “Arizona Horizon” to address the resolution and other timely topics.
“I think that they were confidently wrong about this issue,” Senator Sundareshan said, “…I think what they did is they twisted her words…what attorney general Kris Mayes was actually doing was pointing out that there is a dangerous situation.”
According to Senator Sundareshan, she believes Senate Republicans were twisting Mayes’ words to make it sound like it was a confusing situation where she was putting people in danger.
“I think that from the Senate Democrats’ perspective,” Senator Sundareshan said, “…we stand with Attorney General Kris Mayes, who really has been pointing out the overreach that federal agents had been engaging in…when they are masked…they do not identify themselves as law enforcement, that does create a very dangerous situation.”
Senator Sundareshan emphasized that standing for Attorney General Kris Mayes means that one is also standing for public safety.
“She takes that responsibility very seriously,” Senator Sundareshan said, “…I think it is unconscionable for senate republicans to be spinning what occurred in Minnesota as justified killings…these are not instances where it was justified at all.
These Minnesota instances Senator Sundareshan is referring to are two instances in which U.S. citizens were killed by federal I.C.E. agents.
“Unfortunately, what I think Republicans are doing here is spinning those words out of context, and they’re the ones misleading the public,” Senator Sundareshan said.
Senator Sundareshan discussed the second attempt at tax conformity and believes it is very similar to the first attempt. She explained that this attempt does have some differences, as it includes even more tax cuts for the wealthy.
“We need to be putting forward a tax proposal that both provides certainty, but also is not benefiting the wealthiest and the corporations,” State Sundareshan said.
