Todo Mundo blends the styles of Samba, Rumba, and a Middle Eastern beat and spreads messages of equality and unity through their music. Tracey Mason, general manager for the ASU Kerr Cultural Center talks about the band.

JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: IN SOUNDS OF CULTURA, TODO MUNDO -ALL THE WORLD--BLENDS THE STYLES OF SAMBA AND RUMBA AND A MIDDLE EASTERN BEAT AND SPREADS MESSAGES OF EQUALITY AND UNITY THROUGH THEIR MUSIC. IN FEBRUARY 2015, THE GROUP ENTERED N-P- R'S TINY DESK CONCERT CONTEST. AND, OUT OF THE 7,000 ARTIST SUBMISSIONS N-P- R'S ALT DOT LATINO PROGRAM SELECTED TODO MUNDO TO BE FEATURED IN ONE OF THEIR PODCASTS. JOINING ME NOW TO TALK ABOUT MORE ABOUT TODO MUNDO AND WHERE YOU CAN SEE THEM IS TRACEY MASON, GENERAL MANAGER FOR THE A-S- U KERR CULTURAL CENTER. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. TRACY, THESE GUYS LOOK LIKE A LOT OF FUN.
TRACEY MASON: NAY ARE A LOT OF FUN.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: AND YOU HAVE HAVE THEM BEFORE AT CARE.
TRACEY MASON: YES, WE HAD THEM IN 2013 AND ALSO IN 2014. I LIKE TO BRING DIFFERENT HISPANIC GROUPS TO THE CARE CULTURAL CENTER BECAUSE THAT IS OUR MISSION TO BRING ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT FOLKS AND APPEAL TO ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT FOLKS THERE.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: AND THIS GROUP IN PARTICULAR THEY REALLY MEAN IT. IT IS NOT JUST LATIN BEATS BUT WHERE DOES THE MIDDLE EAST BEATS COME FROM?
TRACEY MASON: IT INCLUDES THE BALTIC BEATS AND PLACES FROM ITALY. AS WELL AS THEIR MEMBERS BEING FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD. SO I HAD MENTIONED IT HE ORIGINATES FROM ARGENTINA AND HE HAS MEMBERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD AND IT CHANGES FROM TIME TIME.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: HE MIXES AND MATCHES KIND OF.
TRACEY MASON: HE DOES AND ALL OF THEM INFLUENCE AND INFUSE THE SOUND.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: WHEN IS THIS PERFORMANCE?
TRACEY MASON: IT WILL BE THIS SATURDAY EVENING, 7:30 AT THE CARE CULTURE CENTER.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO SEE BECAUSE HE MIXES UP HIS FORMATIONS AND TYPES OF PEOPLE.
TRACEY MASON: THIS TIME IT IS A DIFFERENT CONFIGURATION WHICH I WAS EXCITED TO SEE BECAUSE IN THE PAST HE HAS BROUGHT IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT GENTLEMEN WITH HORNS. THIS TIME IT IS GOING TO BE HIMSELF ON GUITAR AS WELL AS THE VIOLIN AND THEN HE WILL HAVE A CO-HONG AND THAT IS THE BOX YOU SIT ON AND PLAY IN BETWEEN YOUR LEGS. IT IS ECO-Y AND GIVES IT A NICE SOUND.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: WE MENTIONED IN THE INTRO, THERE IS NOT MUCH ROOM FOR DANCING BUT PEOPLE DO; RIGHT?
TRACEY MASON: OH, THEY DO. THEY CAN'T HELP THEMSELVES. I CANNOT HELP MYSELF. THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM UP TOP AS WE LOVINGLY CALL THE PIT DOWN BELOW IS YOU YOU GET TO SEE THE BAND UP CLOSE. PEOPLE GET OUT OF THEIR SEATS THERE AND SOME GO UP TO THE UPPER LEVEL AND REALLY MOVE AROUND UP THERE.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THEY HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED. THEY HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED SEVERAL TIMES.
TRACEY MASON: SAN DIEGO HAS AWARDS AND THIS BAND WON THE BEST WORLD MUSIC BAND IN 2011, 2014, 2015 AND HAVE BEEN NOMINATEED -- NOMINATED FOR 2016. PREMIUM SEATS ARE $22 AND $19 IS THE CHEAPEST AND WE HAVE $10 STUDENT TICKETS.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: REASONABLE PRICES. I KNOW THE CARE CULTURE CENTER HAS DIFFERENT THINGS. LET'S TALK A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT IS COMING UP.
TRACEY MASON: NEXT WEEK WE HAVE ONG LEE WHO IS FROM CANADA BUT LIVES IN THE U.S. NOW. SHE GARNERED AS ONE OF THE THREE TOP PIANIST IN THE WORLD. SHE IS PHENOMENAL. WE ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE HER BACK THIS YEAR.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CULTURAL CENTER. LOCATION. CONFIGURATION. PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T BEEN THERE WHAT WILL YOU SEE WHEN YOU GO.
TRACEY MASON: THE CARE CULTURE CENTER RIGHT NOW IS TWO ADOBE BUILDINGS THAT WERE BUILT IN 1948 AND 1959. THE STUIO IS THE VENUE FINISHED IN 1959 BY LOUISE SALE. THERE WAS 47 ACRES AND YOU CANNOT SEE IT FROM THE ROAD BUT YOU CAN AT THAT TIME.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: IT WAS WAY OUTSIDE OF TOWN.
TRACEY MASON: IT WAS. DIRT ROAD WITH TORCHES UP TO LIGHT THE WAY. SHE HAD FIVE BUNGALOWS THEY CALLED THE SHACKED AND SHE WOULD BRING IN INTERNATIONAL STARS LIKE THE JUL JEWEL ARD STRING BAND. SHE IS MY HERO. HER MISSION WAS TO BRING IN ALL DIFFERENT KINDS OF MUSIC. CHAMBER, JAZZ, AS WELL AS WORLD MUSIC. SHE WANTED, YOU KNOW, THE MISSION OF THE PLACE TO APPEAL TO MANY, MANY PEOPLE.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: AND EVENTUALLY IT BECAME, I THINK SHE DONATED IT TO ASU.
TRACEY MASON: YES, IN 1977.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: THE LOCATION IS WHAT?
TRACEY MASON: RIGHT OFF MCDONALD AND OFF GLEN ROAD IS HOW YOU GET THERE.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: MAYBE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE HIGHLIGHTS OVER THE YEARS. YOU HAVE HAD HAD THEATER PRODUCTIONS.
TRACEY MASON: WE HAVE. WE HAVE HAD SOME STARTUP THEATER COMPANIES THAT COME IN. WE HAVE HAD ABOUT EVERY GENRE OF MUSIC YOU CAN THINK OF. WE TRY TO PROVIDE A NICE VARIETY BETWEEN CHAMBER MUSIC. THIS YEAR WE HAD THE HARLEM CORE TET THERE. THERE WAS THE YING CORE TET MUSIC. WE HAVE BROUGHT IN HAWAIIAN MUSIC AND SO MANY DIFFERENT KINDS.
JOSÉ CÁRDENAS: JUST IN JANUARY, WE HAVE TWO REALLY STUNNING ACTS COMING. WHAT ELSE CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR?
TRACEY MASON: ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS IS THE JAZZ SERIES WHICH IF YOU GO TO OUR WEBSITE YOU WILL SEE MANY OF THEM THERE. DAVE STAMY IS COMING IN. A PREMIER COWBOY ENTERTAINER.
